Breast Infection

Breast infection, also known as mastititis can occur when breasts are not completely emptied of milk at each nursing. Germs gain entrance into the milk ducts through a crack in the nipple and the result is: Severe soreness, redness or swelling of the breast, and heat coming from the painful area. To treat a breast infection get lots of bed rest, take antibiotics if necessary and stay well hydrated.

It’s important that you continue to nurse during an infection, because emptying of the breast will actually help to prevent clogged milk ducts. If the pain is so bad that you can’t nurse, try using a pump while lying in a tub of warm water. Lastly, make sure you treat a breast infection right away before it gets worse.
