Intrauterine Device (IUD)

IUD’s (also known as contraception coils) are about 99% effective and work by preventing fertilization. The IUD is shaped like a ‘T’ which is inserted into the uterus by your doctor.

IUDs that contain copper can stay in place for up to 12 years while those that have progestin need to be removed after five years. Some side effects include increased spotting, and cramps. This method of birth control is not recommended for teenagers. So talk to your doctor to see if an IUD is right for you.
