Twins: Raising Individuals

It’s important if you have twins-especially identical twins-to make sure they develop their own individual tastes and interests. Since your twins have such a strong bond, it can be difficult to get them to do things without one another but here are a few things you can do to encourage individuality.

For example, try not to dress your twins identically but try color coordinating instead. You should also call your multiples by their names rather than "the twins" and use their names in a different order regularly. Dedicating one-on-one time for you and each twin separately will show them you appreciate them as individuals and will help encourage their separate interests. Finally avoid labels. Calling one twin "the artistic one" and one "the athletic one" may make them feel pressured to have to live up to a certain role if they want to be an individual.
