Genetic Counselor and Family Medical History

If you are going to see a genetic counselor it’s important to gather as much information on yours and your partner’s family medical history as you can. First, begin talking with your parents and siblings about any medical problems they may have had. Then, start fanning out to grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Some diseases and disorders that you will want to look out for include:

Cancer
Asthma
Diabetes
Heart disease
High blood pressure
Alcoholism

You’ll also want to take note of the age when the problem occurred as well as if a family member was a heavy smoker or overweight? It’s also important to include your relative’s ethnicity since some diseases are more prominent amongst certain ethnic groups.
