Open vs. Closed Adoption

If you are looking to adopt there are two main types of adoption to consider, open adoption and closed adoption.

With open adoption birth parents and the adoptive parents have greater control over the adopting process. At the same time the child may want to establish a relationship with his or her birth parents. This can make the adoptive parents feel their role as parents is being threatened.

In a closed adoption adoptive parents generally feel more secure in their role as parents. However, the child may feel unwanted by the birth parents, which can lead to severe emotional problems. While each process has its pros and cons, the most important thing is to give your child a loving, supportive home in which to grow.
