Storing Breast Milk

Properly storing your breast milk can make all the difference in how nutritious and health-boosting it is for your child. First be sure to wash your pumping equipment, containers, and your hands with hot, soapy water and make sure your breast is clean. Also date your milk before you store it to ensure that your baby gets fresh milk.

The best time to pump breast milk is in the morning when your breast is the fullest. Two to four ounces is an ideal amount to pump. To store the breast milk use a tough plastic or glass container with tight lids to keep the milk fresh. Lastly milk stored at room temperature or in a refrigerator will retain more nutrients than milk stored in a freezer.
