Clogged Milk Ducts

Sometimes while you breastfeed your milk ducts can get plugged. Clogged milk ducts are identified as small, red and tender lumps on the breast tissue. They can cause milk to back up and can lead to infection.

The best way to avoid plugged milk ducts is to ensure that it’s emptied as completely as possible. Offer the affected breast first at each feeding, and let your baby empty it as completely as possible. If there is still some milk left you should remove it by hand or with a breast pump. Also, making sure your bra is not too tight and by varying nursing positions will help keep the ducts unclogged.
