A baby's heart will begin to beat as early as 5 weeks of embryonic development. By 10 weeks, the heart is almost completely developed and will resemble that of a newborn baby. At birth, the baby's breathing will trigger changes in the heart and arteries, and will force blood to travel through the lungs.
