Alpha-Feto Protein Test

The alpha-feto protein test is where a blood sample is drawn from the mother to check the levels of AFP. AFP is a protein secreted by the fetal liver and disposed of in the mother's blood.

The AFP test is used to check for neural tube defects in the baby. It can also indicate some urinary tract anomalies, placental complications and the presence of Down Syndrome.
