Amniocentesis Test

If you are pregnant and over the age of 35 your doctor may suggest having an amniocentesis test. This type of test checks if your baby has a chromosomal disorder like Down syndrome.

The test is often performed at 15 to 17 weeks of pregnancy and involves taking a sample of the amniotic fluid to examine the baby's DNA. Although amniocentesis is relatively safe and beneficial, it does carry a 0.5 percent risk of causing a miscarriage.

So talk to your doctor to see if the benefit of undergoing the procedure outweighs the risks.
