Diabetes and Pregnancy

Affecting about 1 in 200 women in the U.S, pre-existing diabetes can be a significant challenge for any woman trying to conceive and can increase your risk for complications during pregnancy.

A study revealed that baby deaths were four times greater for women with diabetes. Also, babies born to diabetic women had twice the rate of major birth defects. It’s important for women with diabetes to consult their doctor before deciding to become pregnant so that their diabetes can be controlled and properly managed to prevent health risks to their baby.

During your pregnancy your blood sugar+ levels will be monitored by your doctor through frequent blood tests. Also if your body is not producing enough insulin, then acid levels will begin to build in your blood. This can lead to a miscarriage. Women with diabetes may also be advised to have a cesarean birth because they have a higher risk of having larger babies weighing over 10 pounds. However, as long as there are no major health complications, a diabetic woman should be able to deliver a baby vaginally.
