Folic Acid and Pregnancy
If you're pregnant or trying, you've probably heard about folic acid, often found in super-greens, citrus juices, and enriched or whole grains. Folic acid prevents neural tube defects in your developing baby and reduces the risk of brain and spinal defects by up to 70%.
It's important for women to start taking folic acid even before they conceive. In fact, because 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, all women of childbearing age should make sure they have enough folic acid in their diets.
Experts say that women should consume 400 micrograms daily before conception and 800 micrograms daily during pregnancy. So make sure to eat lots of greens and whole grains, and read nutrition labels to make sure you're getting enough.
