Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia (also known as pregnancy-induced hypertension) is characterized by high blood pressure and fluid retention. Serious cases can restrict blood flow to the placenta and could seriously harm your baby.

Women at greatest risk of developing preeclampsia include women over 40, women carrying twins, and women with eating disorders.

Some symptoms to watch out for are: high blood pressure, sudden weight gain not related to food intake and severe swelling of the hands and face. Luckily, if you are receiving regular medical care, preeclampsia is almost always caught early enough. So make sure to get regular check-ups with your doctor.
