A Challenge to Care: Chemically Dependent Women & Infants

Drug use of any kind while pregnant can be a major source of danger to your fetus’s development and health. That is why it is important to speak with your doctor about any prescriptions you may have upon finding out you are pregnant.

Even more dangerous, however, are un-prescribed drugs and illegal narcotics. This is because not only do they cause birth complications and pose health risks to your baby, but they are also not being monitored by a medical professional to ensure proper use and dosage so that the risk is minimized. On top of this, street drugs (like cocaine, crack, heroin, methadone, ecstasy, LSD, PCP, and meth) are not monitored by any sort of food and drug administration or medical association, thus you don’t know for sure what you are even putting into your body.

The use of un-prescribed drugs and illegal narcotics during pregnancy can cause a host of medical complications for your baby including (but not limited to): miscarriage, still birth, low birth weight, underdeveloped vital organs, stroke at birth, and long term behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and neurological damage.

This is a video about the dangers of chemical substance abuse during pregnancy, including resources for pregnant women who have a drug abuse problem.
