What Is A Genetic Counselor?

If you have a known or suspected family history of birth defects or are over the age of 35 and are thinking about getting pregnant, it’s important to schedule a meeting with a genetic counselor. A genetic counselor is able to assess your risk of having a baby with a genetic birth defect During your first visit the genetic counselor will want to know as much as possible about your medical history as well as your family’s. The more information that you can provide the better your counselor can assess your risk for certain genetic problems.

If you are at a very high risk of having a baby with a birth defect some possible solutions your counselor may suggest include in vitro fertilization or adoption. If you think you may need to see a genetic counselor, ask you health care provider for a referral today.
