If you have a known or suspected family history of birth defects or are over the age of 35 and are thinking about getting pregnant, itís important to schedule a meeting with a genetic counselor.

During your first visit the genetic counselor will want to know as much as possible about your medical history as well as your familyís. The more information that you can provide the better your counselor can assess your risk for certain genetic problems.
